FROM THE DIRECTOR:

Hello Team from Chapter Q,

Through heavy historical rains, wind, and high humidity a group of us traveled up to Ontonagon and Copper Harbor in early June.  We were anxiously watching the radar and decided to leave when we thought the storm cells had passed.  Heading up we first hit a wall of black clouds and then heavy rain between Wausau and Rhinelander.  We eventually were able to meet up with two couples from the Antigo area who were also struggling with heavy rain on their own.  We stopped at a Kwik Trip to fuel up and when we got off our bike, water poured out of our sleeves!  Truly a new adventure in riding in poor weather!

Again, looking at our phones reviewing all the weather sites, we decided to stop for an extended lunch and then a stop at the local Honda dealer for rain suits and actual waterproof gloves.  The remainder of the trip to Ontonagon was tame and non-eventful.

Saturday came with decent weather and new enthusiasm for things and sites to see in the Copper Harbor area.  We took a tour of the Quincy Copper Mine which gave us all an appreciation for the hard workers of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  The hard ships and working conditions that the miners and their families went through is truly amazing.  The facility is full of history and technology of that period.

From the mine we traveled to the very tip of Copper Harbor where Highway 41 officially starts.  We took the scenic route back and made several stops to check out the scenery of the Lake Superior shore line.  Just before we headed back to our motel we pulled into a nice restaurant for some good food and fellowship.  During our meal we were serenaded with a band playing jazz music which all of us enjoyed.

Weather alerts were going off on all our phones over night with Sunday forecasts again showing possible strong storms and heavy rain, so we decided to get ready a little early and head for home. We stopped at Bruce Crossings for breakfast and then headed out with no rain!  The only weather issue was high humidity but at least we could take off our rain suits!

Overall, we all had a great time.  We found out after we got home that the very roads that we traveled on Saturday, that sections of the roads were literally gone due to heavy rains on Saturday night.  Areas along the lake including the Houghton/Hancock area received over 16” inches of rain!

Even with the wild weather we encountered, I believe all of us still enjoy the motorcycle trips.  Great food, fellowship, and stories that we all will remember for years to come make motorcycling a great sport!

Speaking of great fellowship and great get togethers, Wing Ding is going to be held in Knoxville, Tennessee from August 28th to September 1st this year.  The Wisconsin District of GWRRA has volunteered to help with ticket sales on Wednesday August 29th, please contact Frank or Sharon Jackson if are able to help on the Wisconsin GWRRA website or Facebook messenger.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all are members for all their input and support throughout the year.  Its hard to believe that July is already here, the weeks are moving so fast.  Until our next ride or get together take care and ride safe!
